The vast extent of the Amazon Basin has historically restricted the study of its tree communities to the local and regional scales. Here, we provide empirical data on the commonness, rarity, and richness of lowland tree species across the entire Amazon Basin and Guiana Shield (Amazonia), collected in 1170 tree plots in all major forest types. Extrapolations suggest that Amazonia harbors roughly 16,000 tree species, of which just 227 (1.4%) account for half of all trees. Most of these are habitat specialists and only dominant in one or two regions of the basin. We discuss some implications of the finding that a small group of species?less diverse than the North American tree flora?accounts for half of the world?s most diverse tree community. |

As técnicas de indução de mutação associadas ao cultivo in vitro tem sido utilizada no melhoramento da bananeira com uma alternativa para redução do porte da planta. O objetivo do trabalho foi obter mutantes tipo Prata (Pacovan e Pacovan Ken) com porte baixo e resistentes a pragas. Gemas axilares de bananeira Pacovan foram irradiadas com raios gamas (20 e 30 Gy) e posteriormente subcultivadas in vitro. As plantas resultantes desse processo foram levadas a campo e avaliadas para nove características agronômicas. Cento e trinta e duas plantas dessas (55 Pacovan e 77 Pacovan Ken) foram selecionadas e reavaliadas em campo, usando as mesmas características agronômicas. Pelos resultados obtidos pode-se constatar valores médios semelhantes para altura de planta e peso de cacho entre os tratamentos para ambas as cultivares. No entanto, grande amplitude de variação foi observada, mostrando que os indivíduos irradiados apresentaram maior variabilidade do que os não irradiados. Conclui-se que é possível selecionar mutantes (putativos) de porte baixo e com boas características agronômicas. |

Gemas axilares de bananeira Pacovan foram irradiadas com raios gamas (20 e 30 Gy) e posteriormente subcultivadas in vitro. As plantas resultantes desse processo foram levadas a campo e avaliadas para nove características agronômicas. Cento e trinta e duas plantas dessas (55 Pacovan e 77 Pacovan Ken) foram selecionadas e reavaliadas em campo, usando as mesmas características agronômicas. Pelos resultados obtidos pode-se constatar valores médios semelhantes para altura de planta e peso de cacho entre os tratamentos para ambas as cultivares. No entanto, grande amplitude de variação foi observada, mostrando que os indivíduos irradiados apresentaram maior variabilidade do que os não irradiados.
